Social Feed

What is Social Feed?

Social Feed is a voice-first road intelligence sharing feature. Record up to 60-second voice posts to share road conditions, traffic alerts, warnings, or driving tips with the community. Unlike traditional social media, voice is the primary format - keeping your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

How do I create a voice post?

Creating a voice post is simple:

  1. Go to the Feed tab in the app
  2. Tap the + button to create a new post
  3. Hold the record button and speak (up to 60 seconds)
  4. Optionally select a route/channel to tag your post
  5. Choose expiration time (1 day, 3 days, 7 days, or forever)
  6. Tap Post to share with the community

Your location is automatically tagged to help other drivers find relevant information.

How can I filter posts?

Social Feed offers three filter options:

  • Global: See all posts from everywhere
  • Route: Filter by specific highways or routes you select
  • Nearby: See posts close to your current location

Use the filter tabs at the top of the Feed screen to switch between views.

How long are posts stored?

When creating a post, you choose how long it stays visible:

  • 1 day: For time-sensitive info like accidents or temporary hazards
  • 3 days: For short-term road conditions
  • 7 days: For longer-lasting information like construction
  • Forever: Post stays until you delete it

Note: Voice post files are retained for up to 2 years for legal compliance, even after the post expires or is deleted. See our Privacy Policy for details.

How do I report a post?

To report an inappropriate post:

  1. Tap the three-dot menu on the post
  2. Select "Report"
  3. Choose a reason (spam, misleading info, inappropriate content, etc.)
  4. Submit your report

Our moderation team reviews all reports promptly. You can also block users to hide their posts from your feed.

What does voting on posts do?

You can mark posts as "Helpful" or "Not helpful":

  • Helpful votes: Surface valuable posts higher in the feed
  • Not helpful votes: Reduce visibility of low-quality posts

Community voting helps everyone find the most accurate and useful road intelligence.

Voice Communication

How do voice channels work?

RotaTalk uses live voice channels for real-time communication:

  • Join public channels specific to your region, route, or interests
  • Share traffic updates, get radar alerts, or just have conversations
  • All communication is hands-free and designed for safe driving
  • Use the Mini Player to browse while staying connected to conversations
  • Switch to Maxi Player for detailed channel information and map view
What are Mini and Maxi Players?

RotaTalk features two player modes for flexible conversation management:

  • Mini Player: Drag to any corner of the screen, lets you browse the app while staying connected to conversations
  • Maxi Player: Full-featured view with detailed channel information, live map showing everyone's location, friend invitation features, and favorite channel functionality

Never miss the conversation while using other app features!

Channels and Groups

How do channels work?

RotaTalk channels are live voice communication rooms organized by:

  • Region: Connect with drivers in your area
  • Route: Join channels for specific highways or routes
  • Interests: Topic-based channels for different discussions

Each channel has experienced moderators and user reporting features to maintain a respectful, professional environment.

Can I become a moderator?

Yes! You can apply to be a moderator directly from within the app. Our community is built on respect and professionalism, and we welcome responsible users who want to help maintain a positive environment for all drivers.

My Teams (Private Channels)

What are Teams?

Teams are private voice channels that you create and control. Unlike public channels, Teams are invite-only spaces for your trusted circle:

  • Private Communication: Only invited members can join and participate
  • Invite Codes: Share unique invite codes or links with people you want to add
  • Full Control: You decide who joins your team
  • Same Great Features: Teams work just like public voice channels with all the same features

Teams are perfect for fleet coordination, convoy partners, family check-ins, or any group that needs private voice communication.

How do I create a Team?

Creating a Team is simple:

  1. Open the RotaTalk app
  2. Go to the "My Teams" tab
  3. Tap "Create New Team"
  4. Enter a name for your team
  5. Your team is ready! Share the invite code with others

Once created, you'll receive an invite code that you can share with anyone you want to join your team.

Are there any limits on Teams?

Yes, there are some limits to ensure service quality:

  • Team Creation Limit: There's a limit on how many teams you can create
  • Member Limit: Each team has a maximum number of members

These limits may vary based on your account type and may be adjusted as the feature evolves. You can see your current limits in the app.

How do I invite someone to my Team?

Inviting members to your team is easy:

  1. Open your team from the Teams tab
  2. Look for the "Invite" or share option
  3. Copy the invite code or share the invite link directly
  4. Send the code/link to the person you want to invite

The person receiving your invite will need to have RotaTalk installed and can join using the code or link you shared.

How do I join a Team using an invite code?

To join a team with an invite code:

  1. Open the RotaTalk app
  2. Go to the "My Teams" tab
  3. Look for "Join Team" or the option to enter an invite code
  4. Enter the invite code you received
  5. You'll be added to the team immediately

If you received an invite link, simply tap on it and follow the prompts to join.

Can I leave a Team?

Yes, you can leave any team you've joined:

  • Open the team you want to leave
  • Access the team settings or options menu
  • Select "Leave Team"
  • Confirm your choice

If you're the team owner (creator), you may need to transfer ownership or delete the team before leaving.

What's the difference between Teams and public channels?

Here are the key differences:

  • Access: Public channels are open to everyone; Teams require an invite
  • Control: You create and manage Teams; public channels are managed by RotaTalk
  • Privacy: Teams are private spaces; public channels are visible to all users
  • Purpose: Teams are for your personal groups; public channels are for community discussions

Both offer the same great voice communication features - the difference is in who can access them.

Location Features

How does the "Go Live" location sharing work?

RotaTalk's "Go Live" feature gives you complete control over location sharing:

  • Manual Control: You must actively tap "Go Live" to share your location with others in your channel
  • Session-Based: Location sharing is temporary and automatically stops when you leave a channel or close the app
  • Mutual Benefit: To see others on the map, you must first share your own location by going "Live"
  • Always Controllable: You can manually stop sharing at any time with the "Stop" button
  • Privacy First: Your location is never shared without your explicit, ongoing consent

This feature is particularly useful when you need to connect with other drivers in your area or request help.

Why can't I see other users on the map?

To see other users on the map, you need to first tap "Go Live" and share your own location. This creates a fair and reciprocal system where everyone who wants to see others must also be willing to share their location.

If you've already gone "Live" and still can't see others, it means there are no other users currently sharing their location in your area or channel.

How do I share my location?

To share your location with others:

  1. Join a voice channel
  2. Look for the "Go Live" button on the map
  3. Tap "Go Live" to start sharing your location
  4. Your location will now be visible to others in your channel

Remember: Your location sharing will automatically stop when you leave the channel or close the app.

Does the app always share my location?

No, absolutely not. RotaTalk only shares your location when you explicitly choose to "Go Live." Here's how it works:

  • Manual Action Required: You must actively tap "Go Live" to share your location
  • Session-Based: Sharing automatically stops when you leave a channel or close the app
  • No Background Sharing: Your location is never shared in the background or without your knowledge
  • Complete Control: You decide when to start and stop sharing
How do I stop sharing my location?

You can stop sharing your location in several ways:

  • Manual Stop: Tap the "Stop" button while you're "Live"
  • Leave Channel: Exit the voice channel you're in
  • Close App: Close or minimize the RotaTalk app

Location sharing will also automatically stop if you lose internet connection or if the app crashes.

Is my location data secure?

Yes, we take the security of your location data seriously:

  • Data is hosted on servers located within the European Union
  • We implement appropriate technical and organizational security measures
  • Only the last known location is stored for safety purposes
  • Location data is only used for essential service functionality
  • Your location is only shared with others when you're "Live"

User Blocking

What happens when I block someone?

When you block another user, the blocking is mutual and comprehensive:

  • Complete Invisibility: Neither of you can see each other on maps, in channel participant lists, or user profiles
  • Audio Muting: You won't hear their voice and they won't hear yours in any voice channels
  • Real-time Effect: The block takes effect immediately across the entire app
  • Mutual Block: Even though only you initiated the block, they also cannot see or interact with you

This ensures a complete separation for both users' safety and comfort.

What happens when someone blocks me?

If another user blocks you, you will experience the same effects as if you had blocked them:

  • You won't see them: They disappear from your maps, channels, and participant lists
  • You won't hear them: Their audio is automatically muted in voice channels
  • No notification: You won't receive any notification that you've been blocked
  • Seamless experience: The app continues to work normally, they simply aren't visible to you

This mutual invisibility protects both users' privacy and prevents harassment.

Will the other person know I blocked them?

No, we do not send notifications when someone is blocked:

  • No direct notification: The blocked user won't receive a message saying they've been blocked
  • Mutual invisibility: From their perspective, you simply disappear from the app
  • Privacy protection: This prevents potential retaliation or harassment attempts
  • Natural experience: The app continues working for them, but without seeing you

This design protects your safety while maintaining a respectful user experience.

Why do I see fewer people in a channel than the "online" count shows?

If you're in a channel with blocked users, you'll see a modified count and explanation:

  • Modified Count Display: Instead of "5 online", you might see "5 online (2 blocked)"
  • Information Banner: A temporary banner appears explaining that some participants are hidden due to blocking
  • Your Protection: This ensures you're aware of the actual channel activity while protecting your blocking privacy
  • Accurate Information: You always know the real number of people in the channel, just not who they are

This transparency helps you understand channel activity while maintaining the blocking system's effectiveness.

How can I unblock someone?

You can manage your blocked users list through the app:

  1. Open the RotaTalk app
  2. Go to the Menu tab
  3. Select "Privacy & Safety"
  4. Choose "Blocked Users"
  5. View your list of blocked users and tap "Unblock" next to anyone you want to unblock

Note: Once you unblock someone, you'll both be able to see and communicate with each other again immediately. They won't be notified that they were previously blocked or that they've been unblocked.

How do I report a user?

You can report users directly in the app:

  1. Tap on a user's profile (from participant list or map)
  2. Select "Report User"
  3. Choose a category: Harassment, Spam, Inappropriate Content, or Other
  4. Provide a description of the issue (5-500 characters)
  5. Submit your report

You can also report Social Feed posts by tapping the report option on any post. All reports are reviewed and handled confidentially.

  • Your Responsibility: You control when your microphone is on or off
  • Manual Control: Your mic stays open until you manually turn it off

What happens if my device is banned?

RotaTalk uses device-level banning to prevent abusive behavior and maintain a safe community:

  • Device Banning: If you violate our terms, your device may be banned to prevent creating new accounts for abusive behavior
  • Persistent Ban: Device bans remain in effect even if you delete your account, preventing new account creation on that device
  • Security Measure: This system helps protect other users from repeated abusive behavior attempts
